James is interested in people, politics, history and the dark arts of governments and their agencies. These interests provide the themes for his stories and he is fortunate in being able to draw upon his own professional experience to bring his writing to life. He draws upon his own previous experience for his plot lines and characters. A gripping twist is one of the most important aspects of the novel, and setting the events in unusual and intriguing settings, whether geographical or historical makes for compelling reading.
